Ear Candle/Ear Candling:  Alternative Therapy – Their Argument

Alternative therapies and procedures are slowly and gradually integrated by the medical professions as part of their clients’ rehabilitation.  Foremost, it is inexpensive but promotes healing process.  These therapies target multiple pains and discomforts like headache, fever, muscles pain and the like. Acupuncture is one of these procedures, through this, chi is believed to flow naturally after the session causing relief and ease. However, a traditional treatment known as Ear Candling has gained argument and dispute among many medical practitioners and patients alike.

Indians known to be the Native Americans and Asians are amongst the few ancient people who use Ear Candling. Some practitioners of this generation now suggest ear candling procedures which are known to alleviate pains and discomforts.  A special type of candle, which they called Ear Candle, is used in this kind of therapy.  This candle is a hollow candle made of muslin cloth soaked in paraffin or bees wax. The ear candle is to be inserted to a plate with a hole.  The purpose of the plate is to cover and protect the face from candle debris and to hold the candle during therapy.

Mechanism:

The therapy involves vacuum mechanism.  The ear candle is lit and burned for few minutes to create heat and helps generate vacuum.  Then it gently pulls out the toxins, earwax and pressure from the sinuses and ears.  It does not cause pain or discomfort.

Indications:

The treatment relieves sinus pressure and pain, improves hearing, stops tinnitus, reduces stress and tension, and stops tinnitus.  Old practitioners believe that ear candling can open and align chakras, release block energy and stabilize emotions.

The Debate:

Ear Candling seems to be popular and is greatly advertised, thus many people have tried and used the procedure.  Most of them attest and testify that it is effective and has beneficial effects in human body. Many are also overwhelmed with the holistic results after the treatment.  Nevertheless, some known medical research journals have reported and published that it is dangerous to the ear and ineffective.  As a result, FDA refutes its practice.  However, in spite of negative news, no one has ever reported any ear damage due to ear candling.
